Research and Development

At Oxford Wave Research, we have experienced staff with extensive knowledge of automatic speaker recognition, forensic linguistics, audio processing and other relevant areas, several of whom hold advanced degrees. We keep up to date with the cutting edge of the field through our in-house R&D and our collaborations with high-ranking universities and institutions (more details about these relationships can be found on our Partnerships page), ensuring that our products employ the most powerful, innovative and reliable technologies available.

Our staff also contribute to several key standards committees, including the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), playing an essential role in maintaining good practice, and boldly, but carefully, encouraging the development and adoption of new technologies.

Our team at OWR is well published, and are regularly invited to share their research through talks and presentations. The topics of our recent publications  include voice similarity, anti-spoofing measures, device variability, and robustness to real forensic conditions. These studies have a close relationship with our products, either through forming the basis for new features or by demonstrating the ways in which those products are well-equipped to deal with real-world challenges.

Our research has been published in prestigious journals, such as Speech Communication, and we have given presentations at some of the industry’s most important conferences, such as the International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics (IAFPA) Conference and Audio Engineering Society (AES) Forensics Conference. A selected list of our publications, presentations, and articles can be found on our Publications page.

We have developed, or helped develop products for other companies and customers on request. We have designed software related to speech and speaker recognition, forensic automatic speaker recognition, audio processing and pattern recognition for Windows PCs and cloud-based operations. We have also developed iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch) and Android apps for audio processing and for voice quality analysis.

Here’s what one of our customers have had to say about working with us:

“Oxford Wave Research were exceptionally great to work with. We posed them a challenge that was very different from their focus in audio pattern recognition. Despite this they immediately grasped what we were looking for and set to developing and adapting their algorithms and tweaking their code to work for our challenge in vehicle vibrations. Development was very cooperative and simple. The ongoing challenges of our project were identified and faced and overcome without drama or cost adds- the entire process was extremely collaborative.” Jeff Hastings, the president of Pro-Cut International

We have a few non-confidential examples of our bespoke work which we can present as case studies, including SmoothRide, the vehicle vibration analysis mobile app created for Pro-Cut International, and the Airbus Noise Profiling project.
